5 out of 5 stars Excellent Product...But Read Entire Review   August 8, 2006

I have used this product for essentially this entire year. I must say, I have been extremely pleased with its performance and ability to protect my computer. When I had originally purchased a new, high quality PC this January I actually thought for a while that I did not require any serious antivirus software. I'm extremely pleased I talked myself out of that.

First of all, the installation was incredibly fast and easy. When you install, it's going to prompt you to turn off the Windows Firewall software. Do it! Norton is far more advanced than Windows security against viruses and such. However, DO keep Windows pop up blocker on. I find that to still be an excellent tool.

As a testament to its ability to block viruses, worms, and trojans...during my first week of use it alerted me of two intrusion attempts to my PC. (A window will pop up to inform you of the attempt and it will tell you it is taken care of or ask you how you want to proceed...depending on your setup of the software) Since then, it has stopped multiple viruses, worms, and trojans and I am so glad that I purchased this antivirus software.

Unfortunately, many people have had serious issues w/ this product. Many have complained that it significantly increases their computer's start up time. Well, first of all, make sure you don't set it to run a virus scan every time you turn on the computer, duh! Many people set it up this way. If you have antivirus...it protects you from getting them in the first place so you really don't need to run a scan at all. At the most, run it maybe once a week. You can set the time yourself under the settings options.

Secondly, many have complained it slows down their computer while they are working. Well, clearly if you are running a virus scan it is going to slightly slow down your computer. Running this type of program uses a great deal of system resources. Don't blame the program for that and give it negative reviews b/c your PC runs slowly when you are running the scan. Also, if you have an older PC...as in you're still using a Pentium III processor or a really weak 4...yeah, it's going to be a burden on your PC when you run a scan.

However, I'll say it again...don't have it set to run a scan at start up and don't expect your computer to run normally when you are performing a scan. For me, w/ the specs on my computer (Pentium 4 3.2 Gig, 1 Gig of RAM)...I see no performance difference even when I am running a scan. Granted, I wouldn't do any high-end gaming during the scan...but general tasks are not slowed at all.

If you have a weaker system just keep in mind the tips and information I have shared w/ you. It's not fair to blame this product for your weak and outdated computer system or because you foolishly have it set to run a scan at start up. Norton Antivirus is an excellent program that has saved my computer from trouble many times and has never given me any conflict with other programs on my computer. I use Windows XP Pack 2, and it runs flawlessly. I highly recommend this product. When my year of free antivirus updates expires, I will renew this product.

5 out of 5 stars Consistently good, and cheap too   November 3, 2006

Have used NAV for many years and periodically re-purchase and update it, this time being NAV 2006. It works great - it updates automatically - the last few versions I have used have not failed to catch anything. Plus with the rebates occasionally in effect it can cost NOTHING to stay with it. Even though they want to trick you at the end of the 1 year update period into "renewing your subscription to Live Update", it usually pays to look for a deal with rebates and re-install the newer version. How they stay in business giving it away for free I'll never understand.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for non-computer savvy people   February 27, 2006

I am no computer whiz... in fact, I am quite the opposite. I purchased this anti-virus software for my work computer and on the recommendation that SOME level of virus protection was needed to prevent the complete destruction of my creations. The more people I asked, the more recommended Norton. I have found this product to be extremely easy to install and use, very helpful in prompting me when its time to update, and so far its actually done its job by detecting a few viruses before they could destroy my work. I am joining my compatriots and recommending this anti-virus software, especially to those who are not sure what they need or how to use it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Software   February 8, 2006
Jason B. Feldman (Houston, TX)
I have been a computer expert for ten years. Symantec is by far the leader in antivirus software. If you simply install the software and do not complicate the installation you will never have a problem. People that complain think they know a lot about computers and complicate the software. It easy to use and will save you a lot of time and money.
