Amazon.com Having long been unfairly dismissed as an ingenious Sinatra impersonator in some critical quarters, it's easy to see why Harry Connick, Jr., has been reluctant to record the sort of pop standards cover album that's become the career refuge of rock artists as diverse as Bryan Ferry and Rod Stewart. But that's exactly what the New Orleans pop revivalist has done here on a slate of familiar chestnuts from the 1950s and '60s. But there's a notable conflict at work between Connick the arranger/conductor and Harry the pop crooner. The former seems eager to infuse his charts with the sort of restless, reinventive musicality he's displayed on recent works as diverse as the stage foray Thou Shalt Not and the neo-bop jazz instrumental collection it inspired, Other Hours, bringing to bear arranging influences as diverse as Ray Charles and Nelson Riddle. But the oft Sinatra-smitten vocalist cruising over those masterfully stripped-down arrangements and bluesy, laconic tempos still seems sometimes reluctant to step out of The Chairman's long shadows--and occasionally basks in them, as on the repeated "Jilly" references in "My Blue Heaven." Still, it's artistically head and shoulders above most marketing-driven retro collections, an album that should delight the Connick faithful with its jazzy arrangements and bittersweet takes on the title track and "I Only Have Eyes For You"--and maybe win a few new converts willing to forgive the periodic genuflection to Sinatra. --Jerry McCulley

Harry gives these standards a twist! February 3, 2004 Tracy J. Johnson (Germantown, MD United States) 15 out of 15 found this review helpful
I love this CD!!! Harry's arrangements are always interesting and innovative, and he doesn't disappoint on this one. "My Prayer" is simple and haunting. "You Don't Know Me" showcases his vocals and piano skills. "My Blue Heaven" has a fun, latin rhythym flowing through it! Harry's voice takes a front seat on this whole cd, and you can hear how it too, has matured as an instrument. A definite "Must-add" to any collection!
HARRY will musically please ...ONLY YOU and EVERYONE ! February 3, 2004 FredericWhite (Montreal,Canada) 18 out of 19 found this review helpful
ONLY YOU is the first must have of 2004. Connick Jr. delivers yet another great cd to his fans. ONLY YOU is the perfect follow up to his gold selling christmas cd. On this product, CONNICK JR. maintains his Sinatra vocal delivery while leaving enough room to demonstrate his gift as a Jazz pianist. The musical arangements are both inventive and catchy. ONLY YOU could have been yet another over the top collection of standard pop songs dripping in sugary arangements yet HARRY knew how to reinvent these standards while molding the collection into a must have CD. From the first notes of the opening track MORE......you'll be hooked the more you listen!
mr connick does it again February 17, 2004 20 out of 22 found this review helpful
harry connick, jr...unlike most singers of standards...will always stand out among those who appreciate the genre. sure, he's got the voice, he's got the look, but he also does all the arrangement and orchestration on this and most his albums, as well as composes his own original music. "only you" takes songs we all know and love and gives them a new, sensual spin. the arrangement of "for once in my life" is innovative and fresh. "all these things" just may single-handedly rekindle the fire in your marriage. the whole cd is lush and romantic, truly like nothing youve heard before, from harry or otherwise. in this world where most popular music is at best superficial, harry connick jr's immense talent always shines through.
Ignorance in America February 17, 2004 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
The problem with today's listener is that they are accustomed to sounds produced by the supremely untalented. Therefore, it's no surprise that people are no longer enthralled by great arrangers or singers. You can see below that an appreciation of great talent no longer exists in this country unless it is hidden in mediocrity. The lack of intellect and perception you can read in these other "reviewers" is telling of the cultural crisis we face in America. Connick is a rarity. He's a great musician. Great pianist. Great singer. Great composer. Great arranger. None of you are qualified to address the level Harry is on. This is just another of his great choices in his career, and he does it better than everyone else.
Simply amazing!! February 18, 2004 evansokc (Warr Acres, OK United States) 12 out of 12 found this review helpful
I have been a huge fan since the "When Harry met Sally' soundtrack, and have waited for an album like this for years. His interpretation is skillful and unique. He maintains the mood of the era with a slight spin. He has revived my love of the Big Band sound and reminds me why music is made. I would recommend this album to anyone who enjoys music full of love and harmony. He simply blends smooth vocals with amazing music and can put anyone with ears in the mood for love.
