BEFVP41 compatibility with software IPsec clients May 21, 2010 Steve F (Palo Alto, CA United States) The BEFVP41 I bought is Hardware version 1.2 and firmware version 1.02.06 - build 003. It installed easily and works fine as a firewall and router between a Comcast cable modem and a Dell 16 port Ethernet switch. This is at one of two remote locations I need access to (Location1). The second location (Location2) uses a Cisco 3005 VPN appliance and I have the Cisco 5.0.01.0600-k9 vpnclient installed on the PC. So I need an IPSec client that will work with the BEFVP41 and coexist with the Cisco client. In all the tests, I installed the test client for the BEFVP41 first, and then installed the Cisco client.
In setting up the IPSec client for the BEFVP41, I tried 5 available software clients on a Windows XP SP3 PC.
I configured VPN on the BEFVP41 as described in the document "VPN with SSH Sentinel and Linksys BEFVP41" [...] . I did get a warning message from the BEFVP41 if I tried to set up a shared key of less than 24 characters, it would let you do it, but I think it caused problems later, so I put in a 24 character key and everything worked OK.
I used the SSL-Sentinel 1.3 client which is free, and it worked fine and does coexist with the Cisco 5.0.01.0600-k9 vpnclient.
The SSL-Sentinel 1.4 client worked fine and coexisted with the Cisco client, but this is not a free client.
The SSL-Sentinel 1.3.2 did not work; it gave errors on install and disabled the Ethernet connection on the PC.
The Netgear VPN01L client, which costs about $40, worked OK, but it does not coexist with the Cisco client. This is probably due to the fact that both clients use the "Deterministic Network Enhancer" device driver.
The ShrewSoft 2.1.5 VPN client connected once with the BEFVP41 and I could not get it to connect ever again.
So, I am connecting to the BEFVP41 box using the SSLSentinel 1.3 client and connecting to the Cisco 3005 using the Cisco client. I need to turn off each VPN client to use the other, but that is not a big problem.
Terrible for remote access from a Windows computer May 14, 2010 Gary Samad (San Diego, CA USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought one of these routers two weeks ago and have spent many, many hours trying to get my Windows XP computer to connect to it as a VPN using the stock Windows software to no avail. The documentation that comes with the router is broken, and refers to an Appendix about configuring Windows XP VPN connections, but that chapter now only refers to connecting one Linksys router to another Linksys router using a VPN connection.
After I started Googling around for more info, I find that this router can't actually connect via a VPN to a Windows XP computer using the stock Microsoft software at all!
I liked my last Linksys product, but this one is terrible. Don't buy it. I'm returning mine.

Best of Linksys VPN Routers January 18, 2008 The IT Guy 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Linksys has recently built a well deserved reputation for cutting corners and building inferior routers. Often features do not work as advertised or at all. That has been particularly true with Linksys VPN routers.
This router is the only Linksys VPN router I've found that lives up to its billing. I have a number of them installed at client locations to create site to site VPNs and they just work. Setup of the router is easy, as is setup of the site to site VPN.
If you need to connect two separate physical locations, this is the right router for the job.
Awesome plug 'n play router April 28, 2007 Jon A. Trimble 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I was a little hesitant after reading all the negative reviews here, but knowing that most people are just plain lame when it comes to tech issues, [...]. I followed the instructions all the way up through plugging in the power adapter. At that point, I didn't have to do anything else, my network was now connected. As I turned on the rest of the pc's and laptop, they all connected to the internet immediately. My home wired network consists of 3 pc's and a laptop, all running XP. BTW, after installing this router (my previous router was a Netgear wireless router, that gave me intermittent connection problems), my measured download speed increased 33%, to 8096 kbps.
Perfect for SOHO remote access January 3, 2007 Michael J. Mcmahon Jr. (Reno, NV USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
The Linksys BEFVP41 is perfect for remotely accessing a small home network with a static IP address. The connections are secure and the setup is extremely easy. Using tools such as the LinSys IPSec Tool, accessing one's home network is extremely easy. I recommend this product to any small- or even medium-sized office that wishes to connect multiple locations or support remote/roaming users.
